Alpha v0.9 released

We're back with a new Super Tux Party release.

This release focuses on polishing the game instead of bringing a ton of new features.

The reason for this is that we're going to start working on online multiplayer, as this has been one of our very first feature requests and we are at a point by now, where it makes sense to implement it. Because this is a big feature, we want to have the game in a good state for this.

Now let's take a look at the big changes in this release.

We've revamped the pre-minigame screen with a much improved design.

The new pre-minigame screen

Besides a much improved layout, it also shows you what minigame type you're about to play, the team colors and only displays relevant controls for 1v3 minigames.

We also have redesigned the minigame end screen you see, after you've played a minigame.

The new post-minigame screen

It's much more visually pleasing and you can see the rewards each player got for their placement. Also the screen just moves on, when all players are ready. So you have as much time as you need to look at the stats.

We also have a new main menu, to replace the old one, to give the game more character.

The new main menu

And a complete new look for the "Kernel compiling" minigame as well.

New "Kernel compiling" minigame

We also changed the way the 2v2 variant works here. Instead of each player filling their own bar, each team has only one bar they must fill. To transform this variant into a real team game.

Also a big shout-out to franzopow, for doing the music in the "Kernel compiling" minigame as well as in the post-minigame screen. If you like his work, consider supporting him at paypal.

As always here's the full changelog:

Hello everyone,

there's a new Super Tux Party release in town!

We've been working a lot on visuals in this release. We've added cell-shading, to get a more cartoony style.

Not cell shaded Cell shaded
Previous look The same scene, cell-shaded

As you can see, we've also changed our board space design to a hexagonal shape and new textures that fit our cartoony theme.

But visuals are not the only thing that's coming in this release. We've got a new minigame called Memory. This is a 2v2 minigame where you and your partner need to find matching card pairs. The team that finds the most of them wins.

We've recruited a host for the boards.

Welcome the official hostess for Super Tux Party, Sara, the OpenGameArt mascot:

Sara

She will be happy to show you around the board and explain the rules if you're not already familiar with them.

At last I want to thank our kind translators. Thanks to their effort, we've got translations for three new languages: Norwegian Bokmål, Russian and Turkish 🎉

If you want to see Super Tux Party translated to your language, then lend us a hand on Hosted Weblate

That's it for now.
See you next release!

Today may be the first of April, but this is not a joke:
There is a new Super Tux Party release!

As announced in the previous release, this release brings a vastly improved version of GNU spaces along with a new space type: Nolok spaces.

How does it work?

GNU spaces

A GNU space

When landing on a GNU space, a minigame will be played. There a two types of minigames:

So GNU spaces help you and all other players.

Nolok spaces

A Nolok space

Nolok spaces are the opposite of GNU spaces. As GNU spaces reward the players, Nolok spaces punish them instead.

Nolok spaces invoke different effects when landed upon, too:

So Nolok spaces give quite bad effects, when you land on them. Better stay away from them!

New minigames

As we've introduced new minigame types, we need of course minigames to implement this new types! The previous version of gnu minigames are now called GNU Coop minigames, so there are 3 new minigames we need to discuss.

Forest Run (GNU Solo):

Forest Run minigame screenshot

This is a Jump and Run style minigame, where you have to dodge rocks thrown by catapults and jump between platforms to reach the finish line.

Dungeon Parcour (Nolok Solo):

Dungeon Parcour minigame screenshot

Similar to the forest run minigame, this minigame is also a Jump and Run style minigame. You need to dodge fireballs instead of thrown rocks.

Boat Rally (Nolok Coop):

Nolok Coop minigame screenshot

In this minigame you need to reach the finish line with your boat. The catch is that each player can only paddle at his position.
Therefore teamwork is important here.

Translations

We've been kindly given a free hosting solution for translation on Hosted Weblate. Translations are open and welcome, so please help out if you can!

Alpha v0.6 released

Happy Halloween!

This new release brings a lot of new features and a big rework of existing ones!

First of all, the KDEValley board got a big rework! It is now much more in line with our general art style.

This are three new settings. You can change:

On top of this, we released a new minigame in the spirit of the upcoming Halloween date! It employs an entire new mechanic. Instead of playing versus the others, the players join forces to help GNU. These minigames are initiated by landing on a GNU space. This implementation is very basic at the moment, so expect to see a vastly improved version in the next release (Along with another new space type, but I'll keep it a secret for now).

We're proud to announce our fifth release after two hard months of work.

Besides many minor improvements, we have full support for localization and background music on the boards and the escape from lava minigame.

This release is not just a regular release, because this release marks the first anniversary of the project and I dare to say that we have made a lot of progress in this one year. Take a look on the picture below and see for yourself ;)

Improvements to the knock off minigame

And this is only a single minigame! We've had many improvements to the boards and the menus as well.

Before I'll give you the changelog, I wan't to thank all contributors for their help to create this enormous achievement, this project wouldn't be where it is today without your support.
